Flórez has always used the recording medium to expand his repertoire with roles he's never sung on stage - or not yet. One example is his Mozart album of 2017, for which he won an Opus Klassik Award as best singer. Now comes the first all-Verdi recital. He has chosen arias and scenes, most of which he's never sung in the opera house (apart from those in Rigoletto and La traviata). "Verdi is the master of depiction. He's depicting all these sentiments that we as roles are having: love, sadness, anger, it's there in the music." says Flórez "As a singer, I'm strongly attached to the bel canto tradition of Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti", Flórez says to explain the album's focus. "That's the tradition Verdi comes from: his early operas are still closely connected with the style of early romantic Italian opera. At first he didn't make any drastic changes to this singing style. The vocal line, the ornaments, the dynamics: all are clearly rooted in the bel canto tradition." He continues: "The ideal voice for early Verdi has to bring along the suavity of bel canto while being a bit more robust. And this is exactly where I see my voice at the moment, which is why this album comes at the perfect time for me as a singer."
