Subexotic Records warmly welcomes Miles Otto, with his debut full length LP Desynclined, objectively his most ambitious and conceptual project to date. Following a series of inaugural EPs inhabiting the margins of dance music and metronomic rhythm, Desynclined takes an unexpected turn. Patterns become twisted, formulae disassembled, and a form of restless energy abounds, feeding off the inherent entropy of live improvisation. The seeds of this transition can be traced back to Miles' time at University, where studies in a variety of 20th century avant-garde music, coupled with the challenges of isolation in new and unfamiliar surroundings began to inform his own work: "The process of searching for something meaningful within chaos lead me to realize that pattern recognition is a primary characteristic of our species and is how people find meaning in life. I started Uni when I was 19, which was a very chaotic time because I had to effectively live the life of an adult before I really was one. My process at this time reflected my life in that I was searching for meaning and happiness within a lot of chaos and complexity. There's a sense of angst and fear in the first half of the album as a result of the frustration of feeling out of control, and a sense of albeit melancholic peace in the second half as I was learning to find beauty within the new complexity." "Most of the tracks on the album were made almost exclusively with analogue equipment, because the way they worked suited my fascination with playing with texture and timbre.. I would sync my equipment with an analogue trigger, sending a noise signal into my sequencers to create utter chaos, and then gradually reduce the level of the noise signal so the original metronomic rhythm would gradually emerge.. The change from chaos to order would be so gradual that you wouldn't notice a change until what you were hearing was vastly different to what you'd started listening to, causing a psychological shift of sorts." This psychological shift is key to Miles' work, as he actively tests the limits of our perception of rhythm and harmony. An idiosyncratic musical language flourishes, an unapologetic stream of consciousness, where the disturbing and the beautiful collide in unexpected and innovative ways. Born from the uncertainty of chaos, this feels like a formidable rite of passage in search of a brave new world. Genre: Electronic
